Share Fair Volunteer Corps 2008!
Once again, this spring Learning Leaders presented a series of Share Fairs, one-day events that bring professionals from different backgrounds and areas of expertise into schools to talk about their career and educational choices. This year, volunteers and Learning Leaders’ friends visited second through sixth grade classes at four schools—reaching over 170 students.

The first Share Fair took place on May 16th at P.S. 327 in Brownsville, Brooklyn, as a part of their annual Career Day: “Aspiring to Greatness: A Vision of Hope.” Learning Leaders staff members Heather Whyte and LaShaun Ellis, Program Coordinator for School Districts 15 and 23, presented a career information session, including a discussion of available resources for students, parents and teachers. Meanwhile, Sweeney Padilla, an insurance agent at New York Life who hopes to become a Learning Leaders volunteer in fall 2008, visited the school’s second and sixth grade classes to speak about his career in the insurance industry.
On May 20, at P.S. 221 in Crowns Heights, College Planning volunteer Albert Tannis, a retired financial analyst and elected member of the Community Educational Council for District 18; Phillip Weis, a senior corporate counsel at Pfizer; and David Ginage, a private investigator, spoke to fourth and fifth graders about their career paths and community interests.

On May 29, employees from Pfizer, the New York Organ Donor Network, and the City’s Economic Development Corporation visited P.S. 92 in Central Harlem, presenting to more than 60 students. The final fair, held at P.S. 75 in Hunts Point on June 11th, featured journalist Barbara Thau, Criminal Defense attorney Seema Iyer, and Director of the Flushing YMCA YouthBuild program, Elizabeth Carmona Morgan. Through these programs, students learned about diverse career opportunities as well as the importance of community service.
