Books & Cocktails with YFOLL
On October 16th, the Young Friends of Learning Leaders hosted Books & Cocktails at Ainsworth Park. Fifty guests gathered to sip cocktails, sample tasty hors d’oeuvres, and bid on a variety of silent auction items. The lively (and generous) crowd raised over $8,500 for Learning Leaders and the communities, families, and students we support.
Volunteer of the Year Recognized in Our Town
“To teach one child, one thing a day, makes me feel like I’ve had a good day. I’ve made a difference.” Carolyn Breidenbach has been volunteering for over ten years at her neighborhood school, PS 198. Jane Heaphy and Felicia Wilson Interviewed on OPEN!
Host Bob Lee of BronxNet TV's OPEN spoke with Executive Director Jane Heaphy and Director of Educational Services for the Bronx Felicia Wilson-Ocasio about Learning Leaders' work in NYC schools. Heaphy spoke of the power of both parents and community members to get more involved in children's education. "You have all these people in the community wanting to help," she said. "Learning Leaders know they are part of a community. It brings us all together; it’s unifying." This feeling of community empowers families as well. "Parents can learn from each other," said Wilson-Ocasio, "it helps them build a network in their school." Check out the video to hear more!

Helping Your Students Prepare for the NY State Exams
Want to learn the purpose and format of the New York State Exams and how test performance is used for student promotion to the next grade? Come to Learning Leaders' Volunteer Workshop on Helping Your Students Prepare for the New York State Exam, held on Friday, March 7th from 10 AM-12 PM or on Friday, March 21st, from 10 AM-12 PM at 80 Maiden Lane. You'll learn activities and strategies to help your students prepare for the test. RSVP by March 5th for the March 7th session or RSVP by March 19th for the March 21st session. We look forward to seeing you there!
